Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: First made in 2008, and available only through distribution (i.e. not via the mailing list), the 2010 Patrina is a perfect entry into the wines of the estate. Made from 100% Syrah (from a variety of estate vineyards) and aged two years in 70% new French oak, its one hell of an entry-level effort and boasts gorgeously pure aromatics (cassis, raspberry, flowers, spice), full-bodied richness and an overall layered, fresh profile thats hard to resist. While it doesnt have the back-end depth of the single vineyard releases, it doesnt skimp on texture and length.
Producer Information
Alban Vineyards is a California estate with a global reputation for its powerful Rhne-influenced blends and varietal wines, which are all sold on allocation, with a lengthy waiting list. The company is located in the Edna Valley in the southern corner of San Luis Obispo County. In total, Alban has 27 hectares (66 acres) under vine mostly located around the winery. This land has a range of different soil types and mesoclimates, making site selection vital. Alban produces around 6000 cases of wine per year, and has also sold grapes to many other producers of note, including Sine Qua Non. The portfolio is led by a group of single-vineyard wines from the Syrah grape Seymour’s, Reva, Lorraine and Patrina. Alban also makes two Grenache-based blends, along with a varietal Mourvdre, and two white wines from Viognier and Roussanne. John Alban first bought land in the Edna Valley in 1990, choosing the area due to its climate, which he thought best resembled the Rhne Valley.
