Producer Information
Thackrey & Company is a Californian wine company based in Marin County though working with vineyards throughout the state. It was founded and run by iconoclastic polymath winemaker Sean Thackrey (1942-2022). It is known for its wines named after the constellations, including the Pleiades non-vintage red blend, Andromeda Pinot Noir and Orion Syrah. The portfolio features a wide array of grape varieties of both colors, though he was probably most closely associated with gutsy reds. Thackrey was often bracketed with the Rhne Rangers movement, though he felt this did not fit his winemaking philosophy. Certainly grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache and Viognier and have been prominent features, but so are Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc. Starting his commercial operation in 1981, Thackrey built up a fervent following from the late 1980s, helped by strong reviews from Robert Parker and other US critics. He worked from a small, apparently ramshackle open-air winery in the small coastal town of Bolinas around an hour’s drive northwest of Sanfrancisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. By 1990 he was one of the most famous wine producers in California who had no vineyards of his or her own.
