Discover a wide range of spicy nuances lightly superimposed on the fruit and flanked by fine, very fresh leather aromas. What most surprises one is how the wine takes over the whole mouth from the initial attack until a few minutes after the finish. The aftertaste and retronasal phase initially transmit even, dominant notes of tobacco which fade to give way to spices such as cloves and black pepper.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 1991 Prado Enea Grand Reserva has a very elegant bouquet of lifted red currant, wild strawberry, mint and leather that is very well-defined and youthful. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, firm tannins and a complex array of flavors: licorice, sage, leather and mulberry fruit. It has very good weight although it has another 15 to 20 years upon its drinking plateau.
- James Suckling: The balsamic and ripe fruit character is very impressive with a dense and silky texture that shows so much generosity at this age. Full and gorgeous. Chewy and savory. Holding on beautifully.
Producer Information
Bodegas Muga is a family-owned wine estate, founded in 1932 in the Rioja region of Spain. It is particularly known for its traditional style Reserva wines that are only produced in vintages of utmost quality. The famous bodega has approximately 250 hectares (617 acres) of vineyards around Rioja a majority of which are around the town of Haro where the winery is based. Fruit for the top wines tends to come from the familys original Baltracones vineyard, where the chalky, alluvial soils are well-suited to Tempranillo and Garnacha. The Muga wine portfolio is led by the Prado Enea Gran Reserva, a red-blend of Tempranillo, Grenache, Mazuelo and Graciano. After fermentation in large oak vats, the Reserva is aged for an additional 36 months in barrel prior to release. Tempranilllo and Graciano feature heavily in the remaining reds and the portfolio is completed by a selection of ross, several Cavas, and oaked white-blends from the Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Maturana grape varieties. Muga’s winery has four fermentation rooms with wooden vats varying considerably in capacity, allowing the winemakers to process different parcels of grapes separately. Oak is important in the winemaking process Muga is one of the few producers in Spain with its own cooperage.
