Producer Information
Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils is a Burgundian wine estate based in the Cte de Nuits. It has a wide array of vineyard holdings, including land in Vougeot, Flagey-Echzeaux, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romane, and Chambolle-Musigny. In 1955, Daniel Rion inherited 2 hectares (5 acres) of his father’s vineyards in Vosne-Romane. For the next 40 years, he gradually expanded this initial hectarage and today the domaine consists of 20ha (50 acres) of cultivated vineyards. When Daniel Rion retired in 1995, he passed the responsibilities of the family business to his four children: Patrice, Christophe, Olivier and Pascale. Winemaker Patrice left to set up his own estate, Domaine Michle et Patrice Rion, in 2000 and since this time Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils has been overseen by the remaining Rion siblings. The majority of the Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils wine portfolio consists of red wines based on Pinot Noir, with a small selection of Chardonnay-based white wines. Vinification of the red wines starts with complete destemming, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in Allier oak barrels, with the percentage of new oak varying depending on the vintage and level. The domaine produces two grand cru wines from plots in Clos de Vougeot and Echzeaux. The estate also owns vines in six Premier Cru vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romane, along with vineyards that fall under both village and regional appellations. The estate’s grand crus see 70-80 percent new oak, while the premier cru and village-level wines see 50 percent new oak. The white wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged on their lees prior to bottling, which takes place approximately 15-18 months after harvest. In addition to its white wines made from Chardonnay, Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils produces a single Bourgogne Aligot wine.
