Despite the distillery closing its doors in 1983, Port Ellen still has a massive following of fans around the world. The label features Jon Beach from Fiddler’s Whisky Bar, Port Ellen collector extraordinaire, looking wistfully off in the distance, holding a bag of sherbet lemons and chamois leather – some classic Port Ellen notes.

Port Ellen Batch #5 – That Boutique-y Whisky Company – Single Malt Scotch Whisky | 500ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Gorgeous, coastal Islay notes, oily seaweed, tarry rope, nutty sea-swept oak. There’s a hint of expressed lemon peel too, which gives depth, and classic Port Ellen chamois leather notes run right through the middle of everything.

Palate: Straight back into wonderful chamois leather, now alongside coconut nougat and some tropical fruit, perhaps some lightly barbecued papaya.

Finish: An immediate hit of sooty smoke, soon joined by nuttiness and eventually some beach barbecue on a massively long and proud finish.

Distillery Information

The Port Ellen distillery was founded in 1825 by Alexander Ker Mackay. The distillery lies not far from the centre of its namesake town, Islays main port, and draws its waters from the Leorin Lochs. John Ramsay, a local Member of Parliament, acquired the distillery after Mackay went into bankruptcy. Ramsay was a leader in his field and recognised the opportunities that exportation to America could offer.
