12 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Amburana (Brazilian Oak)
Amburana is a blend of 12 year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon which are then aged in Brazilian oak barrels; specifically new Brazilian Oak. Amburana is typically used for aging Cachaca. In this case I wanted to create more exotic notes that you get from aging in those barrels. And the specs of this Kentucky straight bourbon speak to the slow, careful process that gives rise to the poetry: aged for 12 years, finished in Brazilian oak, bottled at cask strength, and clocking in at more than 125 proof. It’s also a straight-up rarity
To understand what makes this limited-release bourbon so good, and so deeply seductive, look no further than the new Amburana Brazilian oak barrels that were used to mature it. These barrels were toasted to a #4 char, a 55-second subjection to a roaring fire that is sometimes known as an “alligator char.” The purpose of this charring is to “open” the wood and, ideally, crack and peel it so that the spirit that eventually fills it can more fully absorb all the barrel’s many, subtle characteristics. And Amburana is no typical hardwood. Sourced from the rainforest, it’s the wood that’s most often used to age the rum-like spirit cachaa.
Each bottle has been individually-numbered for authenticity, and is stopped with a heavy gold cork, while the handmade wooden box features magnetic front and back panels.
