Producer Information
Shannon Ridge Family of Wines is a large producer with extensive land holdings in the North Coast zone of California. There are eight sub-brands within the portfolio. Cabernet Sauvignon (or blends), Pinot Noir, Zinfandel are the red grapes which feature most often. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the principal white wine grapes. The Shannon Ridge High Elevation Collection is made from fruit farmed at altitudes between 1200 and 2400 feet (365-730m). Reds are aged for 12 months or more in oak. Shannon Reserve wines are sourced from the finest blocks of the Home Ranch and Vigilance Vineyards. The age worthy red wines, which include a Malbec and a Tempranillo, are aged up to 20 months in oak. The High Valley Vineyard line is made from fruit from Betsy Vineyard in the High Valley AVA. This 75 acre plot (30ha) within the Home Ranch property is named for owner Clay Shannon’s mother. This range includes a Barbera and a spritzy ros. Vigilance Winery & Vineyards is a collection from the 250 acre (100ha) Rolling Knolls Vineyard in the Red Hills AVA. These are lush wines for more immediate drinking. The Urgency range is another single vineyard collection. The estates beloved vineyard dogs are commemorated by the Old Pearl collection. The Playtime red blend and Chardonnay, meanwhile, celebrate World War Two-era pin-up girls, and the Buck Shack wines are named for an old shed on the ranch. One of these is a Cabernet Sauvignon aged in Bourbon barrels. Clay Shannon set up Shannon Ranches vineyard management company in 1993. Three years later he established his first 80 acre (32ha) parcel on the Lake County property known as Home Ranch. This lies between 2100 and 2400 feet (640-730m) on volcanic soils. It benefits from cool winds off Clear Lake and the mountains to the north. The business now farms around 1000 acres (250 hectares) of estate vineyards. Around 3000 acres of additional vineyards are farmed under management contracts. Of this, two thirds lie in the Sacramento Valley, with the remainder split between Lake County and Napa Valley. In the early years of the business the fruit was sold off. Nowadays around half the fruit is used for estate wines, with the remainder purchased by wines in Napa and Sonoma counties.
